What is a Vellum assistant?
Vellum is an always on, personal, and secure AI assistant that lives on your computer, fully owned by you, and customized to your needs. It retains memory of you over time, manages tasks across tools, and handles the work you give it automatically.

How is my Vellum assistant different from ChatGPT or Claude?
ChatGPT and Claude are chat windows that only act on command, train off your data, and have limited memory. Vellum is an autonomous assistant with long-term memory that lives directly on your computer, and can take real actions across your files and tools. Your personal data stays on your machine, none of your data accessible by Vellum unless you opt in, and you can switch between models including OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or open weights via Ollama at any time.

What can my Vellum assistant do?
It can send emails, manage your calendar, browse the web, create slides, write code, run deep research, monitor websites, and execute recurring tasks in the background. It comes with built-in skills for Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, and your filesystem, and can be extended with community plugins or your own custom skills.

Can my Vellum assistant do things without asking me?
Only what you allow it to. Vellum has a fine-grained permissions system built to protect your data. High-stakes actions like sending emails to new contacts, modifying important files, or spending credits require explicit approval until you mark them as trusted. You are always in control.

What can I use my Vellum assistant on?
Vellum is native to Mac and accessible everywhere: iOS, Android, web app, voice, email, Telegram, Slack, and terminal. Your assistant shares the same memory, active tasks, and schedules across every surface.

Is the data from my Vellum assistant private?
Yes. By default, your assistant runs locally. Your conversation history, memory, and credentials stay on your machine and are never used to train models. Vellum is open-source, so you can inspect the code yourself. If you use Vellum Cloud, your assistant runs in an isolated container provisioned exclusively for you.
